Ex-Royal in Oz squad but Feds misses out

14 May 2014

Australia squad announced

Former Reading man Oliver Bozanic has been named in Australia's provisional 30-man World Cup squad, but sadly there is no place for our 'keeper Adam Federici.

Feds can count himself unfortunate; boss Ange Postecoglou has a broad rule of selecting players who have played regularly this season, with Liverpool's Brad Jones also therefore not selected for the plane to Brazil.

In fact, Postecoglou has only selected eight players who were at the previous World Cup in South Africa four years ago.

He said, "The squad has been selected with form and fitness as key indicators as well as having one eye on the future."

25-year-old Bozanic has made the cut, and he spent a number of years in our youth setup as a popular, talented left-footed midfielder player. He now plays in the Swiss Super League and deserves great personal credit for making the 30-man squad.

Another of our former Academy players Ji-Dong Won is in the South Korea squad, and he is joining Borussia Dortmund this summer after previously lining up for Sunderland.

And as we already announced, Pavel Pogrebnyak is in Russia's 30-man squad but Danny Williams is not in the USA party.

Madejski Stadium is hosting a series of World Cup parties for England games - more details here.
