McCleary: "The manager has been fantastic"

Winger praises Adkins

Garath McCleary has hailed Nigel Adkins' influence on his game over the last 12 months, whilst vowing to bounce back from an agonising final day of the Sky Bet Championship.

The wideman scored a spectacular goal to bring the Royals back on level terms against Burnley, though ultimately it was not enough to sneak a play-off spot.

"The manager has been fantastic this year - for me personally and for the rest of the lads. I've got nothing but praise for him," said McCleary.

"He's really positive and hopefully he can get us up next season. We are disappointed and heartbroken but we have to look to rectify it...we just have to get away from football now and get back in next year."

The former Nottingham Forest midfielder also spoke of his chance to grab all three points against the Clarets, after his one on one with Tom Heaton was brilliantly denied by the visiting stopper.

"Me personally, as the critic I am, I know I should have scored it, I'm being a bit hard on myself maybe as the 'keeper made a good save. The dressing room afterwards was quiet, there's nothing that could have been said."
