Sean Long captains Ireland U19s in defeat

14 May 2014

Kelly and Long both feature against Mexico U20s

Young Royals defender Sean Long captained the Republic of Ireland U19s on Tuesday night, as they lost 3-0 to Mexico in a friendly.

Long took the captain's armband and almost scored early on, while our young playmaker Liam Kelly came off the bench for a 22-minute spell.

Fellow Emerald Isle team mates at Reading, Pierce Sweeney and Shane Griffin, have also received call ups to Ireland's U21s squad to face Qatar next week.

Meanwhile, three of Reading's under-18s stars have joined up with Scotland U19s squad at a training camp this week.

Centre back Dom Hyam, who vice-skippered the under-18s in another successful season, and left-back George McLennan are among those meeting up for two days.

17-year-old striker Harry Cardwell, who has impressed for both the U18s and 21s this season, has also flown out to join up with the Scots.

This is ahead of the UEFA U19 European Championships, which takes place later this month.
