Adkins: We're aware of their threats

21 November 2014

Boss prepared for Cardiff test

Manager Nigel Adkins says the Royals face a number of threats when they take on Cardiff tonight.

With the likes of Federico Macheda, Kenwyne Jones - and of course our very successful former striker Adam Le Fondre - in their ranks the boss knows the Bluebirds have a number of attacking options at their disposal.

He told the press this week, "We are aware of Alfie's strengths – as we are of several players in Cardiff’s squad.

"We’ve been on the training ground and worked hard defensively, individually and collectively, as well as on our offensive approach the game. We are well aware that Alfie is a goalscorer by trade and that he only needs one opportunity to grasp it. We didn’t want to lose him in the summer but that is the way that football is. We are very mindful of the threats he will pose but even then we can work on it. We know that he has got a wide variety of goal scoring prowess about him.

"We are not expecting Kenwyne Jones to play because he was away on international duty on Wednesday. It is like everybody. We didn’t have Pearcey and Ryan Edwards back until yesterday. We have got players that have been away and sometimes you have to wait to see if you play them or include them on the bench. You’ve got to be mindful of what they’ve done before and what is coming in the next week.

"Kenwyne Jones is a massive threat for them and so is Federico Macheda. He’s been playing up front with Le Fondre and, being from Manchester United, they have formed a good partnership together since Russell Slade has gone in. They’ve been in good form, especially at home and have scored a lot of goals.

"We know that all season you play every three days really and we are chomping at the bit to have a game. We’ve had a bit of a break and the lads are raring to go, which is good and positive. We are looking forward to going to Cardiff."

Reading welcome back Garath McCleary to their squad, while Shaun Cummings could also be in contention. Anton Ferdinand remains sidelined, while Danny Guthrie and Jem Karacan are also out. Aaron Kuhl is back doing running work after a recent injury.
