Akpan picks up shoulder problem

17 November 2014

Midfielder injured while with Nigeria

Hope Akpan was withdrawn after 51 minutes of Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Congo on Saturday, after sustaining a shoulder injury.

The midfielder is now unlikely to feature for the Super Eagles when they take on South Africa in African Cup of Nations qualifying on Wednesday.

Akpan will return to Reading in the coming days where he will then be assessed by the club’s medical staff. The 23-year-old tweeted about his injury over the weekend.

He said: “Thank you for all the get well soon messages. Dislocated my shoulder in yesterday's game V Congo. Thank God it wasn't anything worse.”

Liam Kelly made his first start for Ireland’s U21 side on Saturday and he, Shane Griffin, Sean Long and Pierce Sweeney could all feature against Russia today.

The Irish youngsters were beaten 1-0 by the USA at the weekend, a game in which Royals forward Andrija Novakovich played the last six minutes for the Americans. The US take on Canada tomorrow.

Harry Cardwell, Dominic Hyam and Jonathan Henly will all be hoping to feature for Scotland U21s in Switzerland tomorrow evening.

Alex Pearce was an unused substitute for the Republic of Ireland on Friday night, as they were beaten 1-0 in Scotland, but he could turn out for the Boys in Green against the USA tomorrow.
