Edwards skippers Aussies; Debuts for Scottish trio

19 November 2014

Success for Academy graduates

Wednesday was certainly a fruitful day for Royals Academy players both past and present on the international scene.

Ryan Edwards captained Australia u23s for the first time in a 1-0 win over Korea, ending their mini tournament on a high after a draw with Brazil and a narrow defeat to the hosts.

Elsewhere, goalkeeper Jon Henly, centre back Dom Hyam and forward Harry Cardwell all came off the bench to make their debuts at u21 level for Scotland in a 1-1 draw away to Switzerland.

The trio entered the fray with their country a goal down in the Stockhorn Arena, Thun, before Norwich City's Cameron King grabbed a dramatic leveller deep into stoppage time.

Henly, who is currently enjoying a loan spell at Welling United, pulled off a superb save from Shani Tarasha just after the hour mark, whilst Cardwell almost bagged an equaliser himself as his overhead kick flew over the crossbar.

There was less time for under 18s striker Andrija Novakovich to make an impact; his USA u20s side were already 1-0 down to Canada as he entered the fray in the 82nd minute - and the forward couldn't quite repeat his recent goalscoring exploits.

Earlier in the week left back Shane Griffin played 90 minutes as the Republic of Ireland u21s drew 2-2 with Russia.

At senior level of course, Academy graduate Alex Pearce helped the men in green to a 4-1 win over America in Dublin. Read more here.
