Kirby up for WSL2 gongThe achievements keep coming for Fran Kirby, after the 21-year-old received a nomination for the Women's Super League 2 Players' Player of the Year Award.
Reading FC Women's first ever professional footballer will attend the FA Women's Awards on Friday evening, whilst former Royals boss Jayne Ludlow - who left her post recently to take over the Welsh national team, has been nominated for manager of the year.
Katie Brazier, FA head of women’s leagues and competitions, said: “It has been a fantastic year for women’s football and the awards will celebrate the best of the game. There have been some real highlights such as the introduction of FA WSL 2, the final day title race drama in both divisions and the fact that attendances in FA WSL 1 have gone up 30 per cent on average compared to last season. The newly structured FA WPL is also off to a great start and the awards will really showcase just how far the domestic game has come.”
Kirby, who scored 29 goals in 22 games last season, faces competition from Millie Bright (Doncaster Rovers Belles) and Beth Mead (Sunderland) for the gong.
The awards take place nine days before England’s historic match against Germany at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 23 November - and Fran has been named in the Three Lions' squad for the clash, with a record attendance of over 55,000 expected.
