Kelly seeking Ireland return

6 November 2014

Full-back targeting a return to the international stage

Stephen Kelly wants to relaunch his international career after making a winning return to Royals action on Tuesday night.

The Republic of Ireland full-back played 90 minutes as a goal from Jamie Mackie and two from Simon Cox secured a well-deserved victory over Rotherham United at Madejski Stadium.

A pre-season injury had kept Kelly on the sidelines for four months but he hopes that his comeback will enable him to add to his 33 Ireland caps.

“I’ve missed the last couple of ones [internationals] through injury,” said the 31-year-old.

“It’s been frustrating but I’m back playing now, hopefully they’ll see that and fingers crossed I can get back involved.

“If I can continue playing for a while longer then I might be able to force my way back in.

“I was absolutely delighted to make my comeback on Tuesday. I’ve been out for a while, which has been disappointing, but to come in and get three points, and two great goals from Coxy, it was a great night.”
