Forward nets in thrilling 4-3 winAndrija Novakovich was delighted to get on the scoresheet in the USA U20s 4-3 victory over Russia on Tuesday evening.
In a topsy-turvy encounter, the young forward bagged the American’s second goal as they triumphed in their opening match of the Marbella Tournament.
Novakovich received possession from Borussia Dortmund’s Junior Flores just before the break and set himself with his right foot, before finishing with his left.
And he was thrilled to see his side come out on top, in what he described as a very chippy game.
“It was a physical game and we just had to deal with it,” Novakovich told americansoccernow.com. “You have to keep it in your head and you just have to keep doing what you are doing and not let it affect you. It can be challenging sometimes.
“Russia started off quick and kind of caught us off guard. They were going at us at 100 miles per hour early on and we just absorbed the pressure and were fortunate in some situations.
“We just kept ourselves in the game. In the second half we took it to them and found a way to win. We just had the mindset to play our game and play to our strengths - keep the ball and create chances.”
