Paramedics praised for life-saving work

12 November 2014

Pair saved Royals supporter's life last season

Reading Football Club paid thanks to St John’s Ambulance volunteer Eddie Chan and pitchside paramedic Rich Company at half time on Saturday.

During the home match with Barnsley last season, the pair had to act swiftly after life-long Royals supporter John Hayward suffered a cardiac arrest.

The 76-year-old, who sits in the West Stand, was brought back to life by Eddie and Rich after they performed CPR and shocked him three times to regain his heartbeat.

He was then rushed to hospital where he underwent a triple heart bypass and Saturday’s clash with Charlton was his first game back at the Madejski.

Mr Hayward told ITV: “It’s superb what they do and to do it voluntarily is marvellous. As for the individuals who treated me, they did a tremendous work and I’d like to thank them for it.”
