Adkins on Rams Cup tie

23 September 2014

Boss eyes victory

Nigel Adkins says the Royals will be aiming for Capital One Cup run if they can overcome Derby County at the iPro Stadium this evening.

Newport County and Scunthorpe United were defeated by the Royals to set up tonight's clash with last season's Championship Play-Off Final runners-up, and it will be a tough test against the Rams.

"We've utilised the squad well in the Cup so far but we want to go as far as possible - it'll be great to have a cup run if we can," Adkins said.

"We'll look at the opportunity to move players round to deal with a busy fixture list, and maybe not risking one or two too early because we've had a horrendous injury list this season.

The boss is pleased with Reading's form despite Saturday's harsh defeat at Sheffield Wednesday, and believes the squad is shaping up well to cope with the demands of the Sky Bet Championship and League Cup.

"We've been on a good run and we've had to adapt to different situations," he added. We had a couple of debutantes at Sheffield Wednesday who did magnificently well.

"The strength of the squad is now building for this really tough campaign. We'll be ready for Tuesday, then we've got a Sunday game and another the following Wednesday."
