Reading U21s 1-3 BoltonStephen Kelly played 60 minutes on his return from injury as the Royals under 21s fell to a 3-1 defeat to Bolton Wanderers at Basingstoke Town's Soccer AM Stadium.
The visitors, who had former Royal Andy Hughes in their line up, opened the scoring via Niall Maher - who finished off a clever free-kick routine 34 minutes in.
Reading did have chances of their own in the first period - with Liam Kelly's dipping strike well saved before the break.
However a moment of magic doubled Bolton's lead just after the interval - as Rob Hall volleyed a sliced clearance superbly home from over 30 yards.
The Royals looked dead and buried as Hall then latched onto a defensive error for his second of the game, but the home side fought back - creating a number of chances before substitute Niall Keown, himself returning from injury, headed home a corner.
Both 'keepers were very busy in the dying stages, whilst Reading substitute Dominic Samuel hit the post from just inside the area - but the Trotters held on to seal three points from a thoroughly entertaining encounter.
