Pearce looks to Georgia test

5 September 2014

Defender focussed after Oman strike

Alex Pearce has reflected on his second international goal for Ireland, after coolly slotting home the second in a 2-0 win over Oman this week.

The Academy product now has two goals in five appearances for his country, the first also against the Omanis, and will hope to have increased his chances of involvement in the qualifer with Georgia in Tbilisi on Sunday.

"It was great. He named the team before the game and you just have to be ready if the manager calls your name out," said Pearce.

"We got the job done as a team and we're looking forward to Sunday now. I was saying to a few of the lads that Oman seem to be a lucky team for me! It's always a bonus as a centre half to get a goal as well as a clean sheet, thankfully we've done both."

Martin O'Neill's side kick off their qualifying campaign with high hopes. A new, expanded format for Euro 2016 has presented the home nations with an excellent chance of qualification. They will however have to battle it out with World Champions
Germany, with the rest of the group made up by Gibraltar, Scotland and Poland.

"We go into the first game in confident mood - a win tonight keeps the mood in the camp very high, and everyone will be bouncing towards Sunday now. Hopefully we get the job done over there."
