U18s earn 2-2 draw at Arsenal

22 September 2014

Royals denied away win

The Royals Academy were denied an excellent away win at Arsenal after a late Gunners penalty sealed a 2-2 draw.

Highly-rated striker Stephy Mavididi put the hosts ahead early on with his eighth goal of the season before Sam Smith won and scored a penalty to draw Reading level five minutes later.

David Dodds' men took the lead after 32 minutes when American forward Andrija Novakovich found the back of the net.

The Royals looked to have secured all three points but Mavididi got his second of the game from the penalty spot with seven minutes to go to snatch the draw.

Gunners goalkeeper Ryan Huddart pulled off a marvellous save to deny Smith at the death, but it finished all square.

Reading will look to build on this result when they take on West Ham United at Hogwood Park this Saturday.
