Win for U21s at Ewood Park

30 September 2014

Blackburn U21s 0-1 Reading U21s (Samuel 45)

Reading's under 21s picked up an impressive 1-0 win at Ewood Park over Blackburn Rovers on Monday night.

Dominic Samuel grabbed the only goal of the game in first half stoppage time, bundling home after Nana Owusu's initial free-kick had been saved.

In front of a 400 strong crowd the home side named seasoned pro Tommy Spurr in their starting line up on his return from injury, as Martin Kuhl continued to give chances to many of last season's successful Academy side.

It was Samuel who came close early on, forcing goalkeeper Ryan Crump to save a header after Liam Kelly's free-kick was whipped into the box.

At the other end Dan Lincoln saved from Modou Cham, before Samuel gave his side the lead - reacting first to clip home after Owusu's free-kick had slid under the wall and away from Crump.

The Royals could have extended their lead in the second period; American youth international Andrija Novakovich coming off the bench and firing narrowly over the bar with 20 minutes left on the clock. A smart save from Crump then denied Samuel his brace, before Lincoln denied Bradley Bauress - though in truth the visiting defence held firm for a deserved three points.
