Kirby scores in England win

10 April 2015

RFC Women star continues hot streak

Reading FC Women star Fran Kirby continued her dream start to the season with a goal for England on Tuesday, in a 2-1 win over China in Manchester.

The striker, who has scored ten goals in just three FA WSL 2 matches, skipped down the left wing and crossed for strike partner Jodie Taylor to stroke home from 10 yards with 59 seconds on the clock.

She went from provider to goalscorer soon after, collecting Nobbs’s ball into the box, turning neatly and rifling a sizzling strike into the roof of the net.

The game was England's final friendly before they head to the World Cup in Canada, with manager Mark Sampson expected to name his 23-player squad on 11th May.

Elsewhere, fellow Royals stars Molly Bartrip and Eloise Wilson were involved in a bizzare game with England at under 19 level.

After losing the original game with Norway 2-1 on Saturday, UEFA ordered a replay of the dying stages after an injury-time penalty from Leah Williamson was ruled out by the officials for encroachment.

Instead of correctly ordering a re-take, Norway were awarded a free-kick, thus denying Mo Marley’s side what would have been a crucial point in the Elite Round stage.

Thursday's replay began with the penalty and Williamson held her nerve to level things up before the final whistle sounded seconds after Norway had re-started the game to ensure England are heading to the Euro Finals in Israel this summer. Bartrip played 90 minutes in the original tie, with Wilson an unused substitute in the much publicised clash.

It was a successful international break for our women, with forward Helen Ward also finding the net for Wales in a 1-0 win, with fellow Royals Kylie Davies, Rachel Rowe, Charlie Estcourt, Claire Skinner and Laura May Walkley also featuring in back to back clashes with Slovakia. Reading FC Women's next home game is on 18th March at home to Yeovil Town, with kick off 6pm at the Farnborough. Click here for a full fixture list.
