How the shot stats stack up

24 August 2015

Royals’ statistics at each end of the field

After a second successive goalless draw at home last weekend, the Royals have struggled to find the all-important breakthrough that would have turned three draws competently accrued in the last week into what probably deserved to be three victories.

But, as the manager alluded to in his post-match analysis after Saturday’s game, creating opportunities in front of goal and pulling the trigger has not been a problem…

After four league games of the 2015-16 season, Reading are leading the way amongst the 72 Football League clubs for having most shots on goal, as well as least shots conceded.

For every shot that has been taken at our goal so far, Reading are registering over 3.28 shots in reply!  To put that in perspective, the closest that any other Championship club can come to matching that is Middlesbrough – who have had 1.43 shots of their own for every shot conceded.

The Royals have taken aim on goal on 69 occasions, more than any other club in the three Football League divisions – fellow Championship side Nottingham Forest have threatened on the second most occasions with 67 shots.

In our own final third, we have limited opponents to merely 21 attempts so far – that’s 4 fewer shots on our goal than closest challengers Portsmouth, who have allowed 25 shots to come their way in League 2 to date.

“We boss the game from start to finish, we create chances and we have shots on goal.  And if you don’t concede you don’t lose matches!” said manager Steve Clarke after the weekend’s game against MK Dons.

“So what can I tell my players?  They got back at nearly 4am on Thursday morning, had two days to recover, played on one of the hottest days of the year on Saturday – and they still bossed the game from start to finish.  As a group, we’re doing a hell of a lot right.

“So I have to tell them that, if they continue like this, the goals will come for sure. Football’s a strange game. But if you keep doing the right things at the right time, keep the right habits and don’t concede silly goals, eventually you start to score goals and win matches.

“And when you start to win matches in this division you can go on a little cycle, a little run, because the games come so quickly after each other.

“This team is positive, in a good frame of mind. We can’t wait for Brentford next weekend.”
