Chalobah: 'Fantastic' Clarke brought me to Reading

Midfielder on first Royals goal

Nathaniel Chalobah has admitted that the lure of Steve Clarke sealed his move to Madejski Stadium – and is hoping to develop his game under the tutelage of the Royals boss.

The on loan Chelsea midfielder bagged his first goal for the club with an excellent finish in the 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday this past weekend, and is aiming to up his goal tally before the end of the season.

“The manager is fantastic and I want to learn as much as I can,” said the 20-year-old.

“His links with Chelsea helped to bring me here, but it was more important what he had planned for me and where he sees me, I had that conversation with him. That’s what swayed my decision. He asked a few things of me, he thinks I’ve got the ability and the legs to go forward and get goals. If a manager believes in you then why not? Why can’t you believe you can yourself? There are things I want to add to my game and goals is one of them. I’m not experienced – I’m 20 years old and for me it’s about being able to learn new things every single day and become better as a player.”

The England u21 international was asked by one reporter if his late surge into the box and tidy finish evoked memories of former teammate Frank Lampard, a comparison which hadn’t escaped Nathaniel himself!

“I did actually think that afterwards! It’s something that I look to work on, the manager was saying yesterday ‘get in the box, get in the box, get in the box!’ and today it’s just come off.”
