Clarke: League is the priority

17 February 2015

Boss focused on picking up points

Royals boss Steve Clarke has stressed that the SkyBet Championship is his priority.

We host Wigan tonight, kick off 8pm, and against the background of the team's fantastic FA Cup run, Clarke is focused on pulling away from the bottom of the League table.

He said, "For the supporters the cup run has been good in an overall disappointing season. There's no point saying anything other than that, it's been a disappointing season for the fans but they should be enjoying the cup run, three good away wins, three good journeys home.

"But the League is the priority and we have to make sure we get away from the bottom of the table. Seven points is too small a gap with 16 games to play, so we have to make sure we start picking up League points."

We have five important games before our quarter final at Bradford, three of them considerable distances away from home, and the Championship schedule does not afford anyone to take their foot off the pedal.

Steve said, "The games come thick and fast. Last week we had a really good away performance at Wolverhampton, then we didn't play quite as well against Leeds and it was a disappointing result.

"So we have to make sure against Wigan we're ready to go again.

"I told the players they could enjoy Saturday night and the coach journey home but not too much, they have to recover properly. It's 48 hours which is a very short space of time. We have to be ready to pick up three points.

"If you look at Reading and Wigan, you would expect them to be up challenging around the play-off spots but neither team has managed to do that. We're a little bit further up the table but they've got good players and will be dangerous opposition. They'll be desperate for a result, so we have to be on our guard for that."
