Clarke in-depth on talkSPORT

21 January 2015

Manager on fans, transfers and more

Royals boss Steve Clarke was live on talkSPORT on Wednesday morning discussing a whole host of topics with Alan Brazil and Ray Parlour, including the January window, our supporters' backing, his aims for the season, Liverpool, Chelsea and much more besides.

You can listen to the full interview here and we've got a transcript of the Reading-related questions below at the official site.

RP: How are you finding it back in management, I'm sure you're looking forward to the progress of Reading, hopefully going forward. The squad of players, are you happy with their attitude and how they've performed in recent weeks?
Ray they've been great for me. Funny enough, the best we played was last weekend at the Cottage, but we lost the game 2-1 so that gives you a little measure of the Championship. You can play well on any given week and the other team can beat you, it's wide open, a lot of the teams are very similar. I've been delighted with the players here, their attitude, their application in what we're trying to do moving forward, they've picked it up quickly and we look for a better second half of the season.

AB: I was going to say, is it a wee bit out of reach the play-offs now, Leeds had a good win last night, they're just below you, you're on 30 points, Watford in sixth are on 44, it's a strange league, a good run suddenly rockets you up there.
That's the thing about the Championship Alan. I'm more concerned about the fact we're only seven points off the teams in the bottom three. But you never close your mind to a play-off position because you know in this League if you can string together a run of five, six, seven games - which is difficult to do - then you can give yourself an outside chance. I would say for Reading it is no more than an outside chance.

AB: Good club Steve isn't it, good support, stadium...
Good club, good setup, supporters have been great since I came in, we just look forward to giving them a bit more to cheer about in the coming weeks.

RP: Steve two weeks left in the transfer window, a lot of activity in those last days, everyone's waiting, have you targeted players, are you going to bring any in before the end of the window?
It's something we're looking at Ray but I've got to be honest my hands are a little bit tied, we're very, very close to the margins of financial fair play, the club are still suffering from having Premier League wages in the Championship. The financial situation to be honest at this moment is not great. We won't be doing much big business, if I can bring in one or two that would help the squad, probably on loan, then I'll try and do that, but normally the loan players don't come up until late in the window.

AB: Lovely part of the world as well Steve, the Compleat Angler is not far away, I enjoy popping down there for lunch!
It's a nice part of the world, I've stayed here since I moved down to Chelsea in 1987. It's been nice for me, it's a good club, a club I've got a good feeling for and hopefully I can bring them a little bit of success.
