Craig "overwhelmed" to extend Royals stay

Youngster on extended contract

Craig Tanner has expressed his delight at penning a new deal with the Royals.

The young striker, who scored the fastest debut goal in Madejski Stadium history earlier this season, put pen to paper on a two and a half year deal on Thursday before joining League Two outfit AFC Wimbledon on loan.

“I’m overwhelmed, having been here for so long I’m so happy to continue to play here and hopefully make some more steps towards the first team,” said Craig.

“It was a dream come true for me to score on my debut but that’s all in the past now and I’m just thinking about trying to score more goals. After my injury I’m back and feel better than ever. Under the new gaffer I’m learning a new side to my game.

“The manager has said that it’s a great time for me to go out on loan. He said I’ve impressed him in training and he just thinks that I should go out there, get some experience, play well and then give him a headache for when I come back.”

The 20-year-old forward will now stay with the Dons until the end of the season, with the Royals having the option to recall him after one month.

“I’m delighted to go out on loan, experience league football on a regular basis and get used to playing Saturday/Tuesday. It’s good to be involved in men’s football and to have three points on the line every time I step out onto the pitch. It would be good to become a vital part of their team and to get them into the play-offs.”

The Camberley born forward was also asked about a potential partnership with Wimbledon striker Adebayo Akinfenwa, also known as ‘The Beast’ for his physical stature!

“I think he’s the biggest target man going and I’m relishing the opportunity to play alongside him! Hopefully he can give me a few pointers and if and when we are on the pitch together, we can build up a decent partnership and start scoring the goals.”
