Royals finish third in 18-team eventReading’s U10s were the highest placed English club as they finished third at the Amsterdam U10 Futsal Tournament last week.
Everton and Southampton also entered teams, as did Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven, hosts Ajax and Sparta Rotterdam.
The young Royals began with a 0-0 draw against eventual winners Anderlecht and followed that up with a 1-0 victory over PSV.
A 1-1 draw with AFC Amsterdam preceded two victories, a 1-0 win over Sparta and thumping 7-0 success over Belgian club Genk, as the Royals progressed from the group stage and into the quarter finals.
They overcame Saints 3-1 in the last eight but were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Ajax in the semi-finals. The youngsters secured their third-place finish with a 2-1 play-off win over Everton.
Afterwards, Ajax Academy Technical director Wim Jonk was full of praise for the Royals and Reading’s Lead Phase Foundation Coach Lewis Goater believes that more games should be contested on the harder Futsal surface.
“It was a different environment for our boys,” he said. “We very rarely play on these hard services, we normally play on grass on 3G, so it was good to play on different surfaces. The boys have loved it. It’s been a good experience and a lot different to what they are used to.
“If you look in South America and Africa they play on different surfaces, so maybe in Europe we play on too good a surface and I would like to see more of it in the development of English academies, especially in the younger age groups.”
