Kirby pens letter after record-breaking moveFran Kirby has today become the most expensive player in British women's football, having signed for Chelsea just before the closing of this week’s transfer window.
She took time to pen a letter to the Club as she moves to the WSL1 League leaders after 14 years at Reading.
It goes without saying that I’m very excited about moving to Chelsea, and I can’t wait to get started at a new club.
But at the same time I am leaving behind so many memories at Reading.
When I joined the club aged 8, I could never have imagined where it would take me. To have success with all my teammates at Reading, score for England in the World Cup and now make this move, it’s all a little bit surreal to be honest!
My journey at Reading has been something very, very special. The Club have supported me in so many ways, and there are so many people I need to thank for helping to get me where I am today. I honestly can’t name enough people, so it’s just right for me to say I wouldn’t be here without all the players, coaches & staff who I’ve worked with. Thank you.
I must say that I’m proud that Reading have got a transfer fee for me, because investment is so important to the ladies setup. The Club itself makes a valuable contribution, and I’m delighted & proud that I’ve been able to leave a little bit of a legacy, if you like. Just don’t let Grace Moloney spend any of it on a new car after she passed her test last week!
Obviously, moving to Chelsea who are top of the League and in the FA Cup final is fantastic for me personally and an opportunity I just couldn’t turn down. In that sense it was an easy decision, but I’m still conscious of what I’m leaving behind.
I just want to finish by wishing Reading good luck this season, they’re in a great position top of the League, and more than anything I look forward to playing each other in WSL1 next season!
