How Hector & McCleary made Jamaican history

19 July 2015

Michael & Garath make Gold Cup semi-finals

Michael Hector and Garath McCleary both played a full part as Jamaica reached a first Gold Cup semi-final since 1998.

Our duo each played 90 minutes as they saw off Haiti 1-0 thanks to an early goal from former Derby man Giles Barnes.

Ex-Reading duo Jobi McAnuff and Adrian Mariappa also played the full game, with Mariappa providing the assist for Barnes.

McCleary has played every minute of their four games so far, scoring twice and also providing one assist.

This was Hector's first start of the tournament, having played 82 minutes as an early sub in the previous game versus El Salvador. It was a double celebration for Michael as just a few hours later he was celebrating his 23rd birthday.

Our duo will now prepare to face hosts United States in the semi-final in Atlanta on Wednesday night at 11pm UK time.

If they progress, the final is on Sunday 26th July, while the third/fourth placed play-off is a day earlier.

Having played against the likes of Messi and Cavani in the Copa America, and now experiencing real success in the Gold Cup, it has been a great international summer for our duo, and the Club would like to wish them the best of luck in the semi-final later this week.

Happy 23rd birthday to my younger @Big_Hec35 a fellow non-leaguer who will play (mark my words) at the vTOP! 👊🏾😉☺️😂✌🏾
