McShane: Clarke made me feel wanted

Royals defender delighted to be here

New defender Paul McShane says Reading's clear desire to sign him made a big difference in his decision to join us.

McShane has been here for a few short weeks, and was very impressed after Steve Clarke came over to his homeland to sell the club to him.

Paul has settled in well to life in new surroundings and said, "I came here because of the whole package really. I look at the team, the gaffer coming over to see me in Ireland, he sold the club really well and, I knew myself from all the Irish players who've been here in the past, they said it's a good club.

"I weighed things up myself, I wanted to be somewhere where I was really wanted and I felt that here."

Paul links up again with fellow Irishman Stephen Quinn, who also arrives after leaving Hull City this summer. "Stephen was a big part of it as well, I know how much of a good player he is. He’s one of the rare ones that are real characters in the game, and I think he brings an awful lot. That will be evident throughout the season.

"The squad’s got a good base, I think if we get a good pre-season under our belts then have a good start, you just never know, you never know and, in this league I think everyone is looking to get promoted because it can be done.

"You’ve seen it in the past, and I think we’ve got a good chance, we’ve got a good manager, and we’ve got the experience there in the back-room staff with Steven Reid coming in and Kevin Keen and the others as well, so it’s all looking good.

"Being here after a few days it felt as if I’d been here for a year, and everything I’d seen is all positive at the minute so, let’s try and go for it."
