19 June 2015

Look ahead to the new campaign

Following the release of the Championship fixture list on Wednesday morning, preparations for the new season are in full swing for club staff and fans alike.

And here, in a month-by-month feature, takes a peek at what the Royals have to look forward to in the second month of the campaign.

Reading v Ipswich Town
Sky Bet Championship
Madejski Stadium
Saturday 12th September, 3pm

The first weekend of September is occupied by an international break, the first of four within the 2015/16 campaign, and when domestic action returns the Royals host Ipswich Town at Madejski Stadium. The two clubs have a knack of facing each other early in the season in RG2; a narrow finish from Jake Taylor earned Reading all three points on the opening home matchday of last season. Reading also won the reverse fixture at Portman Road in February to complete a league double over Mick McCarthy’ Tractor Boys, who ended the season in the play-off positions. They were beaten by local rivals Norwich City over two legs in the semi-finals of the end-of-season matches.

Reading v Derby County
Sky Bet Championship
Madejski Stadium
Tuesday 15th September, 8pm

Reading and Derby contested four games last season, with each club winning two apiece. The Rams came out on top in the opening half of the campaign, winning at Madejski Stadium in the Championship and progressing in the Capital One Cup at the iPro Stadium. The Royals took revenge in the East Midlands, though. First, Steve Clarke’s men booked their place in the quarter finals of the FA Cup with a 2-1 win in February, and they signed off the 2014/15 with an emphatic 3-0 win, which denied the Rams a place in the play-offs. Derby will have a new look to them come August as Paul Clement has taken the managerial reins, and he has already drafted in four new player – including former Royal Alex Pearce.

Bristol City v Reading
Sky Bet Championship
Ashton Gate
Saturday 19th September, 3pm

Last season was a magnificent campaign for Bristol City as they secured their return to the second tier by lifting the League One title. Steve Cotterill’s side recorded 99 points, winning 29 of their 46 league games and losing only five. Centre-back Aden Flint bagged an incredible 15 goals from defence, while frontman Aaron Wilbraham contributed 18 and Kieren Agard also reached double figures with 13. The Royals last took on City in our promotion-winning 2011/12 season. Mathieu Manset scored a stoppage-time winner in a 3-2 win at Ashton Gate and a solitary goal from Jason Roberts earned Reading a 1-0 win at Madejski Stadium.

Burnley v Reading
Sky Bet Championship
Turf Moor
Saturday 26th September, 3pm

Having dropped out of the top flight in May, Burnley will begin the season with promotion back to the Premier League on their minds. The Clarets’ most recent match in the Championship came against the Royals on the final day of the 2013/14 season as the two clubs fought out a 1-1 draw at Madejski Stadium. Since then, Burnley have graced the Premier League for one season and they will be eager to get back there. Sean Dyche’s side will be without talismanic striker Danny Ings, who has joined Liverpool. Ings and former striker partner Sam Vokes both bagged 20 goals in Burnley’s promotion-winning campaign on two seasons ago.
