Earthquakes and ice pools for Reggae Boyz Royals

12 June 2015

The latest edition of McCleary's 5 Mag diary

"As many have seen from my Twitter there’s a first for everything and this was my first hand experience of an earthquake," Garath McCleary began his latest online diary entry with 5 Mag.

"A magnitude of 6.1 in some other countries its devastation but here they’ve grown accustomed to it. My first thought was ‘what’s that?’ – Me and Michael looked at each other as bottles of water and the TV started to shake.

"We then realised it was a quake. When it happened again I thought about the building coming down and jumping off the balcony or as stupid as it sounds hiding under the bed, haha hiding under the bed, now what would be the point in that!!!"

Hector made his Jamaican debut in a behind closed doors friendly against Chilean club side Cobreloa earlier in the week and a 2-0 win stands them in good stead for Saturday night's opener against Uruguay.

"Preparations for a practice match against Cobreloa a team in the Chilean Primera Diviśòn. The game came at short notice for us all but we were ready none the less. They were a decent footballing side playing a 4-3-3 formation and wanting to maintain possession from the back.

"We went 1-0 up in the first half, good pressure on their back line from Kemar Lawrence, he intercepted and advanced to the goal finishing with aplomb (my journo side coming out)…haha."

And McCleary linked up with a former Royals teammate to set up the second. "Second half we went 2-0 up quite early after the restart. After good work from Jobi McAnuff he released me down the wing, advancing to the byline, cutting the ball back to where he continued his run into the box to convert with a tidy finish.

"All in all it was a good run out, no amount of training is the same as game time so that will definitely stand us in good stead."

"Doing things properly with my former teammate and captain, Jobi McAnuff…late night ice pools to aid recovery after the game."

"A nice meal, something different from the hotel norm was a good change. Chicken and shrimp fajitas. Ordering the food was a pretty hard task until Giles (the linguist that he is) reeled off everyone’s order. I definitely need to learn Spanish though, any tutors give me a shout…"

"With team mates (left to right) Me (in a beautifully modelled flower top), Wes Morgan, Giles Barnes, Mapps, Hec, Daniel Gordon (who’s living and playing in Germany for Karlsruher) and Jobi."
