Five-star Reading FC Women stay top of WSL2

Durham Wildcats 0-5 Reading FC Women

Reading FC Women consolidated their lead at the top of WSL2 this weekend with the 5-0 thrashing of Durham Wildcats on Sunday afternoon.

In-form Emma Follis bagged a double with captain Kirsty McGee, an own goal from Durham’s Jen Jennings and Lois Roche completing the scoring for the rampant Royals.

Now heading into the mid-season break, Reading lead the way on goal difference, having won seven of their opening nine league outings.

The Royals went ahead after just five minutes when Follis snuck in behind of the home defence to slot home her sixth goal of the season. Reading goalkeeper Grace Moloney then made a smart stop from Courtney Corrie to preserve the lead and, at the other end, Laura-May Walkley came within inches of connecting with a low cross to make it 2-0.

Walkley then forced home stopper Anna Moorhouse into a good save, with Follis putting the rebound just wide, and the Royals held a one-goal lead at the interval.

Moloney sent a long clearance down field that Helen Ward latched onto on 48 minutes, but her well-directed lob dropped just the wrong side of the crossbar.

Reading would not take too much longer to extend their lead, though. After Lauren Bruton was felled on the edge of the box, Roche whipped in a free-kick that Moorehouse spilt and McGee was on hand to backheel the rebound into the net.

On the front foot, the league leaders continued to dominate and Becky Jane fired in a dangerous, low cross 11 minutes from time that Jennings could only divert into her own net. Roche made it four soon afterwards, powering into the top corner from range before Follis completed the rout late on.
