Michael Hector and Garath McCleary both started for Jamaica in their final Copa America group match against Argentina on Saturday evening.

After falling behind to Gonzalo Higuain’s early opener, the Reggae Boyz defended stoutly for the remainder of the contest but, at the other end, were unable force an equaliser as they went down by one goal to nil.

Jamaica made three changes to their side that started against Paraguay, with Dwayne Miller, Lance Laing and Deshorn Brown replacing goalkeeper Dwayne Kerr, Giles Barnes and Simon Dawkins.

Higuain opened the scoring on 11 minutes. He collected a low centre from Angel Di Maria inside the penalty area, turned his man and placed a low strike into the corner of the net.

The Napoli striker almost doubled his tally after 22 minutes when he latched onto a through ball from Lucas Biglia before sending a lob onto the top of the crossbar.

Di Maria countered down the left just before the interval, following a Jamaica corner, but the Manchester United winger’s finish was hacked off the goal-line by the a man in yellow.

Di Maria again went close seven minutes into the second period, sending a powerful left-footed drive off the frame of the goal. Jamaica probed for a leveller late on but could not find an equaliser as they exited the Copa America.

The Reggae Boyz’ summer is not over yet. They get underway in the CONCAF Gold Cup next month.
