Fran's World Cup adventure starts here...Reading Women striker Fran Kirby is hoping to impress on the the biggest stage of all this evening when her England side begin their World Cup campaign against France at 6pm (UK time).
"Everyone in the squad is buzzing, can’t wait to get going," she told the Daily Mail recently. "We want to do something that no other England team has ever done at a World Cup, going past the quarter-finals, and then on from there.
"Obviously people will look at the top-ranked nations, Germany, the USA, Sweden, Japan. But we’re up there. I’m just going to make sure I play the best I can.
"I’ve proved I can do that against Germany, against USA, against Sweden. And that’s one thing I relish, the pressure of having to try and beat the best teams in the world. If we didn’t dream and have that expectation of ourselves, then there’s no point in being here."
BBC Sport presenter and commentator Jacqui Oatley recently had words of high praise for the Royals striker, backing the 21-year-old to shine out in Canada.
"Fran’s a busy, skilful little player. Very, very tricky. Look on YouTube and see the goal she scored in the Continental Cup against Arsenal last season.
"She received the ball in midfield, made a beautiful little flick to take her past a Japanese World Cup-winning defender, and went on to score a fantastic goal.
"She looks comfortable at international level. Hopefully, she’ll have a good tournament."
England's Lionesses will open their campaign against France this evening, against Philippe Bergeron’s French side. Kick-off is at 6pm BST and live coverage will be on BBC 2 and Radio Five Live.
