Work begins on Madejski Stadium pitch

4 June 2015

Playing surface undergoing post-season renovation

Madejski Stadium’s pitch has begun the process of its summer renovation.

As well as hosting 23 Championship matches, a Capital One Cup tie and an FA Cup Quarter-Final replay last season, the surface handled all of the home league games of Aviva Premiership Rugby Club London Irish.

Following that, the turf was used for the PlayStation’s Schools Cup, the Royals Cup and for numerous pitch hire events but, at the beginning of this week, its rebuilding process got underway.

After spraying the entire surface with a weed-killing compound, the pitch was torn up with a piece of Desso-specific machinery.

Desso are synthetic fibres of grass, which aid the strength of natural grass, and the special machinery enabled the groundstaff to tear up the vegetation without disturbing the Desso technology.

Once the pitch was bare, the staff were able to begin the re-seeding process and, after four days, a thin layer of grow sheets were placed down on the surface.

These will lock in any moisture and nutrients, providing the surface with the best possible growing conditions, and they will remain on there for seven to 10 days.
