Five-star Fran makes it nine goals in two games

Reading FC Women 7-0 London Bees

England striker Fran Kirby made it nine goals in two games for Reading FC Women as she continued her lightning start to the new season with a five-goal haul in the 7-0 thumping of London Bees.

The victory at The Hive propelled the Royals up to the summit of FA Women’s Super League 2, making them the early season pace setters.

Prolific Kirby opened the scoring after just 10 minutes and, after collecting possession from Emma Follis, she doubled her and her side’s tally nine minutes later.

Reading skipper Lauren Bruton converted a penalty to make it three before Kirby twice rounded Bees goalkeeper Sophie Harris to add two further strikes before the break.

Bonnie Horwood, who assisted the Royals’ fifth goal, added her own name to the scoresheet 10 minutes after the break by slotting beyond Harris.

And Kirby then completed the rout with 77 minutes on the clock when she skipped past a couple of challenges and then picked her spot with a calm finish.

The Royals are next in action when they host Watford on Thursday and Kirby is intent on continuing her strong form.

The England international said: “I just want to maintain this form and keep scoring goals; I couldn’t have got off to a better start this season. Last year, I managed to win the Golden Boot and that is the ambition again.

“We didn’t come here expecting to win as well as we did. Thankfully we just managed to capitalise on a few of their mistakes. We have some great players and thankfully I am there to score those goals by getting in the box.
