Right-back to remain at Madejski until summer of 2016Reading Football Club are pleased to confirm that we have recently taken up the option to extend Chris Gunter’s contract by a further year, and the Welsh international is now tied to the club until the summer of 2016.
The 25-year-old defender’s contract was due to expire at the end of this season, but the club have taken their option of an additional year on his deal, keeping the former Cardiff City, Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest right-back at Madejski Stadium until the end of our 2015-16 campaign.
Manager Steve Clarke said, “Chris is an important member of the first team squad and, once I knew there was an option to extend Chris’ contract, I asked the club to take it up immediately.
"Consistency of performance is what every manager wants from his players and Chris delivers consistently good performances."
Gunter has now made more than 100 starts for the club since signing from Forest less than three years ago.
Currently away in Israel on international duty with Wales, Chris became the youngest Welshman to collect 50 caps with his country last season, before coming second in Reading supporters’ ‘Player of the Year’ vote at the end of the club’s 2013-14 campaign.
This season, Gunter began the first 31 games of the season in all competitions, and since returning from injury he has taken his total appearances this season to 36 out of a possible 44.
