'Pearce typified our players' effort'

Skipper plays on despite injury

Alex Pearce played on despite a broken nose in Saturday's FA Cup game at Bradford - and Steve Clarke said his effort typified our performance on the day.

Our skipper broke his nose right on full time after a challenge with Francois Zoko, so with blood streaming he had to change his entire kit but came back on to help see out what was an epic cup tie.

Clarke said, "I was delighted with the attitude from the players, it was top class.

"And I thought it was typified by our captain coming back on with a broken nose, nothing was going to stop him. His nose is miles over here somewhere! But he went back on, a proper centre half.

"It would have been easy to say I'm not going back on, but no Alex said patch me up, straighten it later and he was straight back on the pitch. 14 players gave everything they've got."

He continued, "The players adapted really well after only one training session and a couple of video meetings. We paid a lot of attention to the Sunderland game, Bradford beat them deservedly so we knew what to expect.

"It's a replay now and it's still a dangerous tie - they went to Stamford Bridge and won. I said beforehand it was 50/50 and it's still the same now."
