Sweet Caroline back at Glen Little's request

10 March 2015

Song makes welcome Madejski return

Sweet Caroline is making a return to Madejski Stadium after a call from Royals legend Glen Little.

Our former winger was on BBC Berkshire on Tuesday morning talking about our FA Cup draw, and while on the airwaves he asked that Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline is played again.

And the club are very pleased to welcome it back, starting tonight against Brighton.

A Reading fan named Fran had called the Andrew Peach show to try and whip up the atmosphere at Madejski Stadium, and Glen's suggestion was, "Get Sweet Caroline playing at the start of the game, get everyone going!"

He also told the full story of why the song is important to the club's history, saying, "It all started when we won the League in the 106 year, just before the end of the season we were all in Marbella in an Indian restaurant, seven of us players, we just started singing it, everyone joined in and we actually ended up getting kicked out for being a bit too noisy!

"We'd had a good night, then we thought we'd get something to eat and the restaurant had never seen anything like that I don't think!

"It just stuck from that holiday, it became our song. The group was me, Nicky Shorey, Steve Sidwell, John Oster, Chris Makin, Graham Stack and John Halls, we used to call ourselves the Magnificent Seven!

"We played Sweet Caroline at the promotion party, we thought it might stick, the players loved things like Hi Ho Silver Lining at Wolves and Delilah at Stoke when they get that going. So we thought we'd make it our song at Reading."

So the club are very happy to start playing the song again, especially with so many important home games coming up in League and Cup.

And it also coincides with a call to arms from Manager Steve Clarke, who asked our supporters at last week's Fans Forum to help find a song for the Club.

Speaking in his programme notes tonight Steve says, "At the Fans Forum I asked the fans two things, firstly, to be supportive of the players because they need you.

"The second question I asked was 'What is the Reading song?' to which the rather surprising answer was ‘we don’t have one'! So I’m throwing this one out there for you to come up with something!!"

Take a listen below to familiarise yourself with the Neil Diamond classic, and listen out for it just before kick off.
