Cox and Pearce named in provisional Ireland squad

12 May 2015

Duo could face England and Scotland

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill has included Alex Pearce and Simon Cox in his provisional 33-man squad for the upcoming internationals against England and Scotland.

The Republic take on the Three Lions at the Aviva Stadium in a friendly on June 7 before hosting Scotland in UEFA Euro 2016 Group D qualifying four days later.

Cox made his international debut against Northern Ireland in 2011, starting alongside Robbie Keane up front and scoring Boys in Green’s fifth goal in a thumping 5-0 win.

Since then, Tilehurst-raised Cox has gained 30 caps, three of which came at EURO 2012. Cox has four international goals to his name.

Pearce also grabbed a goal on his inaugural Ireland appearance, which came against Oman in September 2012. His other international goal, coincidentally, came against Oman too, in a 2-0 win in September 2014.

The Reading academy graduate has won six international caps in total, with the latest coming against the United States of America in November of last year.

The Ireland squad will be shortened ahead of assembling on June 1.
