Icelandic midfielder targeting another successful season

U21s midfielder Sammi Fridjonsson is delighted to have penned a new contract at Reading Football Club.

The Icelandic engine roomer has been an important part of Martin Kuhl’s and Lee Herron’s U21s side that won promotion to Premier League Division One this season.

He also featured for the Royals as they won the inaugural U21s Premier League Cup last year and was a key member of the 2014 FA Youth Cup side that reached the semi-finals.

And he is now targeting another successful campaign once the new season gets underway in August.

“I’m really pleased to have signed a new deal and it has been an amazing season in the U21s,” he said. “We are a great team and there is a great atmosphere around the U21s. We have shown great character and everyone has been perfect all season.

“We started the year a bit sloppy but we got ourselves together, got the semi-finals of the U21s Cup and since then we have kept going and shown really good character.

“It was brilliant to get promotion. It is what we aimed for at the beginning of the season, which is good. Next year we don’t look at the big teams as massive or better than us.

“We are a big team as well now in this age group and it is nothing that we can’t handle. We have got some great players, great staff and a great coach in Martin Kuhl. I think that we will do really well.”
