Long, Sweeney and Griffin get Ireland U21s call

14 May 2015

Trio face double header with England

Sean Long, Pierce Sweeney and Shane Griffin have all been named in the Ireland U21s squad for their friendlies with England C and England U21s at the beginning of June.

The trio have made up three quarters of Reading’s promotion-winning U21s’ back four for the majority of the season, and were part of Martin Kuhl’s side that kept six clean sheets in a row throughout March and April.

Left-back Griffin and right-back Long were both on scoresheet in the 3-0 win over Stoke City on April 27th, while centre-back Sweeney was on target in the 2-1 success against Blackburn Rovers in March.

Long was one of 11 academy graduates to make his first-team debut this season. He came off the substitute’s bench in the Capital One Cup victory over Scunthorpe United and Griffin was also in the squad that day.

The trio could all line up for the U21s’ final match of the season against West Bromwich Albion at Madejski Stadium on Friday, 7pm. Fans wishing to attend the game can do so for FREE.
