Norwood in Northern Ireland squad for important qualifier

20 May 2015

Green and White Army host group leaders Romania

Oliver Norwood has been named in Northern Ireland’s squad for their friendly with Qatar and crucial EURO 2016 qualifier against Romania.

The Green and White Army take on the hosts of the 2022 World Cup in Crewe on May 31st before facing a behind-closed-doors training match against the Republic of Ireland.

Attention then turns to their important qualifier against Group F leaders Romania on June 13th. They currently trail the Romanians by just one point and victory at Windsor Park would put Northern Ireland in pole position to reach their first major tournament in 29 years.

A 2-0 defeat in Bucharest in November is the only blotch on Michael O’Neill’s side’s qualification campaign thus far; they have recorded maximum points in their other four matches.

After June’s vital clash, the Irish travel to the Faroe Islands, host Hungary and Greece and concluded their campaign in Finland. The first two of those games come in September with the latter pair falling in October and, in the reverse fixtures, they recorded wins over all four nations.
