U18s overcome Villa

25 November 2015

Barrett double gives Royals away win

Reading took all three points against Aston Villa as Captain Josh Barrett, who recently signed his first pro contract for the Royals, netted twice to give the Under 18s a win on the road.

Villa who had been in good form heading into the game, couldn’t get into the first half as the Royals dominated. Reading took a deserved lead in the 35th minute when Barrett found the back of the net.

Midway through the second half the hosts levelled from the penalty spot. Jake Humphries stepped up to take the kick, dispatching it with confidence to make the score 1-1.

In a hotly contested second half both sides pushed for a winner and on the 70th minute it was Reading that made the breakthrough. Barrett was again the scorer from a corner catching Villa goalkeeper Emmanuel Idem off guard in windy conditions.

Barrett’s goals earned him a call up for the U21s, playing for the Royals on Monday in their narrow 2-1 away defeat to a strong Leicester side, whose team included Nathan Dyer and Andrej Kramaric.

The win for the Under 18s puts them second, two points behind Chelsea, who have a game in hand. The Reading youngsters have seven league games remaining in this phase of the season including a home clash against top of the league Chelsea.
