U21s pipped by experienced Foxes

24 November 2015

Youth team defeated in East Midlands

Our Under-21 contingent slipped to defeat at the hands of Leicester City yesterday, who were 2-1 victors at Belvoir Drive.

Nathan Dyer, who spent four seasons playing Premier League football with Swansea City, opened the scoring for the Foxes after half-time, and Jak McCourt doubled the lead before the hour.  Rowan Liburd netted in the dying stages for the Royals, but it proved academic.

Andrej Kramaric, who joined Leicester as their record signing last January in a deal reported to be worth £9 million, was first to go close after dropping a shoulder and firing into the side netting.  Fellow first-teamer Dyer had a shot blocked, before former Parma and Atalanta centre-half Yohan Benalouane did well to get in front of Liburd as a cross came over.

Sami Fridjonsson and Andrija Novakovich both had chances for the Royals before the break, but the Icelander’s 25-yard shot was wide and the American striker saw a shot saved from close range.

However the hosts finally got their noses in front after the interval; Nathan Dyer made a well-timed run to the far post to hammer past Stuart Moore from close range.

Soon after, home captain McCourt doubled the Foxes’ advantage – he pinched the ball high upfield before slotting a composed finish, putting Leicester into a 2-0 lead within 12 minutes of the restart.

Liburd halved the deficit in the 89th minute, and centre-half Jake Cooper came close to grabbing a last-gasp equaliser in stoppage time but fired over in a congested penalty area as Leicester held on to claim the victory.
