Flashback to victory against pace-setting BladesToday marks ten years to the day since the Royals went some way to reining in the early-season Championship league leaders Sheffield United with a last-gasp 2-1 win at Madejski Stadium, en route to setting the record-breaking 106 points tally at the end of the campaign.
Even in early October, it was already something of a six-pointer at the top of the table. The Blades were on scintillating form and had won 10 of their 11 games leading into the weekend – they were six points clear of us when they arrived in town. An away win would have stretched the gap to nine and would have vindicated the South Yorkshire side’s status as title favourites.
The searing form of the visitors counted for little when Brynjar Gunnarsson volleyed Reading into the lead with the game just three minutes old. However the Blades threatened to fight back when Steve Kabba put his head where it hurts to level the scores before the break. Controversy reigned when Blades custodian Paddy Kenny cleared handled the ball outside his area – but the referee remarkably issued just a yellow card.
But Sekou Baradji delivered an 89th-minute free-kick into a dangerous area, allowing Gunnarsson go ghost in and nod home his and Reading’s second – and secure all three points for the Royals.
Fast forward ten years, and as fate would have it we host another team that we’re chasing down towards the top of the table this weekend, when Middlesbrough head to Madejski Stadium.
Aitor Karanka and Steve Clarke’s teams both head into the game in fine form – and we don’t want you to miss out on this all-important clash in the top echelons of the Championship table. Another electric atmosphere this Saturday will go a long way.
