A look at our recent wins over Middlesbrough at Madejski StadiumMiddlesbrough first visited Reading playing at Elm Park back in 1927 where they fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Royals. That season, in the old Division Two, Boro won the return fixture 5-0 ten days later.
More recent seasons has seen a mixed bag of results between the two sides at Madejski Stadium, but there have been some memorable victories for Reading. Here’s a recap of our three most recent wins.
Reading 2-0 Middlesbrough
Tuesday 22nd April 2014
The Royals' most recent home victory against Boro came in the tail end of the 2013/14 season. Reading ran out 2-0 winners on the day by outclassing Middlesbrough with Adam Le Fondre scoring the first of the two and his 14th goal of the season. The second saw Boro defender George Friend head into his own net from a Jordan Obita delivery. The result put Reading into the top six of the Championship with two games remaining of the season. We missed out on the play-offs eventually, however, despite obtaining four points form a possible six in the final two games. Brighton pipped the sixth place.
Reading 5-2 Middlesbrough
Saturday 5th March 2011
Reading’s previous win over Middlesbrough was another Championship meeting in the 2010/11 season. The Royals were emphatic winners on this occasion with Ian Harte and Shane Long, both scoring twice for the home side, after Hal Robson-Kanu had given them a 14th minute lead. Current Reading defender Andrew Taylor was in the Middlesbrough side that afternoon, with former Royals striker Leroy Lita scoring both goals for Boro on his return to the Madejski, but his goals weren’t enough to stop Reading begin what would go on to be an eight-match winning run. The Royals would ultimately finish fifth that season, making it all the way to the play-off final, but lost out on promotion to Swansea City after falling to a 4-2 defeat at Wembley.
Reading 3-2 Middlesbrough
Saturday 19th August 2006
In the 2006/07 curtain-raiser, Reading and Middlesbrough met in the Premier League for Reading’s first ever top flight fixture. A thrilling encounter ensued as the Royals came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in front of a full house. Stewart Downing had put the visitors ahead and when future Reading striker, Yakubu, doubled Boro’s lead things were looking bleak for the home side. Two goals in two minutes however from Dave Kitson and Steve Sidwell right at the end of the first half levelled the scores, with Leroy Lita netting a 55th minute winner for the Royals and making it a perfect start to the season for us. Newly promoted to the top-tier, we went on to finish an impressive eighth in what turned out to be a memorable campaign.
