Under-18s defeat Murty's men

21 October 2015

Academy boys pick up seventh win of the season

The Royals' under-18s closed the gap in chase of Chelsea at the top of the Barclays U18 Premier League table, with a 2-0 win over Graeme Murty's Norwich City at Hogwood Park at the weekend.

Two second half goals earned the home side all three points - Conor Davis struck his seventh of the season just after the restart to put the Royals ahead.

Then, soon after the hour, Sam Smith fired home his fifth of the campaign to seal our seventh win from the opening ten games.

This weekend, the Royals will travel to league leaders Chelsea, who sit just a point ahead of second-placed Reading in the table after settling for a point at near neighbours Fulham last Saturday. Then we end October with a difficult trip to Arsenal on the last day of the month.

Reading: Southwood, Akinwumni, Medford-Smith (Scheving 58), Bennett, Osho, Andresson, Frost, East, Davis, Barrett, Smith.
Subs not used: White, Howe, Collins, Shokunbi.

Norwich City: Oxborough. Sambu, Boateng (Syme 75), Crowe, Wallis, Ellesley, Limb (Walters 75), Aransibia, Couzens, Kamal, Lewis.
Subs not used: Hale-Brown.

The format
Reading's youngsters currently sit six points clear of fifth-placed Aston Villa in the southern section of the Barclays U18 Premier League - and are battling to keep a top four spot to ensure they are fighting amongst the elite come the next phase of the campaign.

In total, 24 clubs compete in the Barclays Under-18 Premier League, 17 clubs from the Barclays Premier League and seven from the Championship. The 24 clubs are split into two regional groups, the North Group and the South Group and clubs will play each opposing team in their regional group twice, home and away.

For the final stage, all the teams will be separated into three groups. The top four teams from each region go into Group 1 in the final stage. Group 2 will consist of the teams placed fifth to eighth from the north and south. The bottom four clubs from each region go into Group 3.

Then in the final stage, clubs will play each opposing team in their own group once and then the winners of Group 1 will become the Barclays Under-18 Premier League champions.

Come and see us clash with the Canaries
Don't forget, Reading will be locking horns with Norwich City again on Monday 26th October when our Under-21s team take on the Canaries at Madejski Stadium.

Entry to the match and parking at Madejski Stadium is completely free for all fans – all supporters will be based in the West Stand Lower. And we will be hosting a Halloween-themed signing session with some of our first team players that evening too!
