Last chance to join Futsal Academy at Madejski Stadium

4 September 2015

Royals scholars to compete in National Development League

The final few places remain in Reading FC's newly established Futsal Academy, which is blazing the trail for football based education in the South West. The Royals are one of a flourishing network of professional football clubs to partner with @Futsal Group and join the Futsal National Development League (NDL), which offers scholars the opportunity to gain BTEC qualifications whilst competing in a fully sanctioned national games programme.

Scholars that join Reading's Futsal Academy will learn and train on site at Madejski Stadium, using a specially created state-of-the-art 21st century learning portal. The specialist Futsal training that they receive will prepare them for NDL match-days at Birmingham International @Futsal Arena.

Lee Herron, Assistant Academy Manager & Professional Development Coach at Reading FC, commented: “We’re really excited to establish a Futsal Academy here at Madejski and are looking forward to seeing the scholars progress through the ranks. In working with @Futsal Group in the past, we’ve seen a number of talented individuals flourish both on and off the pitch, and are confident that having an Academy here in Reading will only increase that.  The Futsal National Development League is a fantastic opportunity to compete against other clubs around the country, and I’m sure the scholars will wear the Royals’ badge with pride!”

The Futsal NDL programme sees professional football clubs around the country partnering with @Futsal Group in order to deliver their Futsal BTEC qualification, whilst competing in an officially sanctioned national games programme. The qualification is the equivalent of 3 A-Levels, and is combined with employability skills and careers advice. These are the next generation of study programmes incorporating the game of Futsal as an enrichment activity, and feature the world’s first dedicated Futsal coaching syllabus.

Frank Rodriguez, Chief Executive of @Futsal Group, commented: “This programme provides a unique experience in education and Futsal for all of the scholars involved. What we have developed is unique and world class.

“It is a fantastic opportunity for anybody that shares our own drive, ambition and commitment to quality. The enrichment of working with a professional football club really demonstrates the level of opportunity available for the young people that sign up to this programme.  We’re delighted to be working so closely with a club of Reading FC’s calibre and look forward to seeing the fruits of our partnership emerging from both the Futsal pitch and the classroom.”

The Futsal NDL games programme is officially sanctioned, and features matchdays at each of @Futsal Group’s arenas. Representing their respective clubs, scholars will battle it out in regional divisions with the hope of qualifying for the national Grand Finals, which will take place in Birmingham - the largest indoor Futsal facility in Europe. Match highlights and interviews will be broadcast on Futsal NDL TV, and players will have access to an online management portal as well as a range of interactive social media platforms.

Scholars applying for the satellite programme in Swindon will learn and train at @Futsal Swindon and represent the Royals in the NCA Futsal Super League. This is an existing partnership, which recently saw the Reading FC side win the Soccer AM Futsal Cup at the Copper Box Arena in London.

Georgia Graham, a Futsal Academy graduate and currently the full-time Assistance Disability & Activities Officer at Reading Football Club, commented: “If it wasn’t for the education and Futsal scholarship, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I have such a passion for football and Futsal, so being able to work at Reading Football Club now is a real privilege and that dream came true because I joined the Futsal Academy programme.”
