Opportunities to impress against Everton

Boss looking for eye-catching displays against Toffees

Reading manager Steve Clarke believes that Tuesday evening’s Capital One Cup third round tie will be an opportunity to showcase the strength in depth that the Royals’ squad has, and allow some of the lesser-used players to stake a claim for a regular spot in the side.

A rebuilding process over the summer saw 11 additions into the camp, but some of the new arrivals haven’t had much gametime to showcase their talents to the home supporters yet because of some outstanding displays from a settled side in the opening weeks.  So now the manager wants the players that are involved against Everton to give him the right kind of selection headache next weekend in Burnley.

“We’re looking forward to a really good Capital One Cup tie against Everton this week, and we’re looking to continue this run.  The players are relishing the challenge,” said the Royals boss.

“I’ve got a number of players who need to play – they have worked really hard and trained really hard.  I’ll tell the supporters now that there will be a significant number of changes to the team, but it’s great evening for them to come along and let everyone see that we’ve got a really good squad here.

“All of the players are going to make a contribution over the course of a very long and difficult Championship season.

“The boys that went into the game against Bristol City went in with a good attitude and saw the game out comfortably for us.  And at the moment this is what the substitutes have to do.  When they get the chance to start games, they have to show me that they deserve to be in the starting 11.”
