Quinn wants confidence-building win against Gibraltar

Midfielder looking for maximum return from international weekend

Royals midfielder Stephen Quinn is hoping that Ireland can take a win at a canter against Gibraltar this evening in Faro, and use that as a platform for Monday’s game against Georgia at Aviva Stadium.

Ireland were dealt a particular tough hand with their qualification pool, and currently lie fourth in Group D behind Poland, Germany and Scotland.  However Gibraltar have netted just a single goal and shipped 34 in their six games to date without registering a point, and Ireland were 7-0 winners against UEFA’s newest member when they met in Dublin last October.

“I think we’ve got to get out there and maybe score some goals early [against Gilbraltar],” said Quinn, who is in the national team alongside club-mate Paul McShane. “We need to go and enjoy it really to get some confidence throughout the squad.  We need to pass the ball, get some goals and get the confidence up for the game against Georgia on Monday, which will be a massive one.

“Anything could happen out there.  But we’re full-on favourites to win the game, and we should do as well.  Hopefully we can get the goals and get the confidence flowing throughout the squad.”
