Striker reaches 50 goals on these shores…By turning in an equaliser for the Royals against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday evening, Czech striker Matej Vydra took his tally of goals to 50 in England!
The 23-year-old forward showed a predator’s instinct for scoring when Ollie Norwood’s shot – which was travelling at pace but sailing a couple of yards wide of the target – was turned inside Dorus de Vries’ post by Vydra to level the scores. That goal, Vydra’s 50th in English football, set Reading up to go on and win the game – it was a stunning effort from Norwood that won it in the final 10 minutes.
Vydra first moved to England in time for the 2012/13 campaign with Watford; he notched for the very first time on English soil with a last-minute winner for the Hornets in a 3-2 triumph away at Crystal Palace in August 2012 on his Football League debut.
22 goals for Watford in his opening campaign landed him the Championship’s Player of the Year award, and his 16 goals for the Vicarage Road club last season helped the Hornets to Premier League promotion. Those loan-spells with Watford bookended a stint with West Bromwich Albion in which he netted a further three in the top tier.
Despite having a few ill-timed injuries this season, he extended his tally as the leading goalscorer this campaign of our current crop of players. He has struck 9 goals in Royals colours – and 10 in 2015/16 for club and country, which includes his goal for Czech Republic against Sweden in the most recent international break!
Congratulations to Matej on reaching his 50-goal landmark on these shores! Take a look below at one of the highlights from that tally – his first career hat-trick, which came for the Royals against Huddersfield in the FA Cup earlier this year…
