Stats show our fans are fantastic!

23 April 2016

Attendance facts and figures highlight supporter loyalty this season…

With the final home fixture of the season approaching next weekend, we wanted to say a personal thank you to our loyal fan base.

On Tuesday night, some social media and local press reports focussed on the fact that Madejski Stadium welcomed its lowest attendance in 12 years when Hull City made the near 500-mile round trip for the 8pm kick-off in Berkshire.

In the last two seasons, our final league positions have been undeniably disappointing. But that statistic also serves as a reminder of exactly how good we’ve had it here at Reading Football Club during the twelve years that have passed since…two title-winning promotions, three seasons in the Premier League – including an eighth-placed top flight finish, the rollercoaster ride of two play-off campaigns, four FA Cup quarter-finals and a semi-final trip to Wembley…

The attendance which was last lower at Madejski Stadium came in a 3-1 win over Preston here back in September 2004. And if ever proof were needed that the tide can turn quickly in football, Steve Coppell’s Royals went on to earn 106 points and take the club into the top flight for the first time in its history the very next season!

And to briefly put this season in context, in the last twelve years since that win over North End, this club has only finished outside the top nine teams in the Championship on two occasions (inluding this season). In that same period of time, two former European Cup finalists have spent seasons in the third tier of English football.

This weekend we travel to Loftus Road, with more than 1,500 fans following us – more that we took with us when we last visited QPR in chasing a play-off place back in February 2014. Thank you for your support!

And despite two frustrating league campaigns, the figures comparing this season to last season show how faithful our home supporters have remained.

Compared to 2014-15, this season…

- the number of Season Ticket holders increased…
- the total number of fans through the turnstiles in league matches at Madejski Stadium are up…
- the number of tickets bought by non-ST holding home fans for specific matches in the league have risen…
- the number of home tickets sold on a league matchday at the Madejski rose.

We all want more fans here, helping to create an atmosphere at Madejski Stadium and cheering on our players, week in, week out. And we’d like to take this opportunity to thank you wholeheartedly for standing by us through the lows, in anticipation of the highs.
