McCleary and Stam eyeing more cup success

22 August 2016

Manager and winger preview MK Dons’ visit on Tuesday

Garath McCleary knows a thing or two about a cup run… it was the Jamaican international who netted against Arsenal at Wembley to cause wild celebrations in our FA Cup semi-final.

And while it may still only be August in a brand new season, we could already book a place in the third round of the EFL Cup with a win against MK Dons on Tuesday in the 8pm kick-off at Madejski Stadium.

Remarkably, 10 of the 22 Championship clubs which competed in round one were knocked out by lower-league opposition... so McCleary is keen to avoid any upsets from the visitors and to seal a place at the next stage.

“In the Championship anyone can beat anyone – and it’s the same in the cups,” McCleary said ahead of the midweek clash with the Dons.

“So we won’t take them lightly.  We’ll be going into the game looking for the win.

“In the past few seasons we have had some good cup runs, so we aren’t going to want anything less.  We know it will be a tough game – we played MK Dons last season and we lost our last game against them.

“But when they come here we’ll want to win the game and try to progress as far as we can in this competition.”

Manager Jaap Stam is also confident that the Royals can book themselves a place in round three and potentially a draw against one of the Premier League’s top sides – the competitors in Europe enter at that stage.

“It’s another nice game to play – they have got a good strong team as well, so it’ll be a hard game – we know that as well,” Stam added.

“But of course when you play in the cup, you want to get as far as you can – hopefully all the way to the final, but we know that’s not going to be easy.  We’ll give it a shot and on Tuesday we’ll be working very hard to get a result.”
